I’m new to publishing and want some more info

I get this question a lot, so I wanted to offer some general insight on the process. 

If you're going to publish your book traditionally, meaning you hope that a company like Random House or another publisher will publish your book, you'll want to look into representation by a literary agent. Publishers generally don't accept "unsolicited requests", meaning you need an agent for an editor to even look at your work. If you go that route, and get your book picked up by a publisher, they will assign a talented designer/art director to your cover project and take it from there.

If you want to self publish, you'll be in charge of everything from editing, finding a cover artist, marketing, distribution, and so on. Rates for cover designers range from quite low to very high, depending on the person you're hoping to work with. You’ll need to research some designers who work with self publishing clients.

In order to hire an artist/designer for your cover, you'll need the final manuscript or enough of a synopsis to get a sense of the book, some ideas of positioning (the genre, some other covers of books that are similar to what you're hoping for, etc), a budget, and a timeline for the final. In your budget, you'll want to factor in the cost of art (stock photography can be pretty affordable, from $15 for a handful of images to hundreds of dollars, depending on the stock house, the image rights you’re licensing, and so on) and type costs (commercial typefaces can also range from very low to very high depending on the font), in addition to the cost of hiring the designer themselves.
